CarPlay Games: 10 Road-Trip Games With a Live Scoreboard on Your Dash
First, the honest part: Apple doesn’t allow real games on CarPlay while driving — no app can put interactive gameplay on the dashboard of a moving car, and that’s a good rule. But that doesn’t mean the big screen can’t be the most fun part of a road trip.
The trick is a tap-counter widget: a big number on the dashboard that goes up every time a passenger taps it. Add one (or two, for rival teams) from CarTheme’s games collection, and suddenly every classic road-trip game has a live scoreboard — 0-1, 2-3, 7-6 — glowing on the dash like a stadium jumbotron.
One safety rule for everything below: the driver plays by voice only — calling out spots. Passengers do the tapping.
Counter games (score by tap)
1. Red Car Rally
Everyone picks a color at the start. See your color — call it, your counter goes +1. First to 20 wins, loser buys the gas-station snacks. Two counter widgets side by side = perfect team play.
2. Slug Bug, civilized edition
The classic Beetle-spotting game, minus the punching. One tap per Beetle spotted (call “Bug!” first to claim it). Vans, classic Minis or Teslas work too — pick your spot target per round.
3. Plate Hunter
Out-of-state (or foreign) license plates: first to call a new one gets the point. Long highway stretches become surprisingly competitive. Play to 15.
4. Yellow Car
The endless family favorite: yellow car = +1, taxis don’t count. The counter persists across the whole trip — a two-week vacation scoreboard is a beautiful thing.
5. Highway Cricket
Passenger version of the classic: pick a “batting” target (e.g., trucks) — each one spotted is a run, +1 on the counter. A red car is “out”, batting passes to the next player. Highest innings wins the trip.
6. Countdown Race
Flip a countdown widget into a game: “50 miles to the border — will we spot 10 cows before it hits zero?” Beat the clock together, or split into teams.
Quiz games (parked or passenger-run)
CarTheme also ships real trivia widgets — Car Quiz (guess the motor) and Movie Quiz — built for stops, charging breaks and drive-through queues. While the car is moving, the passenger reads questions aloud and the cabin votes; while parked, tap and play directly. Keep score on… you guessed it, a counter widget.
No-equipment classics (dashboard keeps score)
The counter also upgrades the games that need nothing at all:
- 20 Questions — counter tracks questions used.
- Would You Rather — tally whose choices win the cabin vote.
- The Quiet Game — timer widget up front; the numbers don’t lie.
- Story Chain — one word each; counter counts completed rounds before someone breaks.
Bonus: the mascot is a game too
If the back seat is younger, a mascot widget is a tiny tamagotchi for the car: a pixel character that reacts to taps, changes mood, and lives through dawn, day, dusk and night on the screen. Quietly entertaining for a hundred miles.
