What is CarTheme?
CarTheme is an iPhone app for personalizing CarPlay: custom widgets and themes for the iOS 26 dashboard, plus startup sounds that play automatically when your iPhone connects to the car.
What do I need to use CarTheme?
An iPhone running iOS 26 or later, and a car or aftermarket head unit with Apple CarPlay support (wired or wireless).
Is CarTheme free?
Yes, the app is free to download and includes free widgets, themes and sounds. CarTheme Premium (weekly or annual) unlocks the full sound library, all theme presets and custom audio imports.
How do I add CarTheme widgets to CarPlay?
Design your widget in the app, then add it in iPhone Settings: General → CarPlay → your car → Widgets → Add Widget. Widgets appear when you swipe right on the CarPlay screen. Our tutorial covers every step with screenshots.
Why don’t my widgets show up in the car?
Widget layouts are stored per vehicle. Make sure you added widgets for the specific car you’re connected to (Settings → General → CarPlay → select that car → Widgets), and that your head unit supports the iOS 26 widget layout.
How do startup sounds work?
CarTheme listens for the CarPlay connection event on your iPhone. The moment your phone pairs with the car, your chosen sound plays through the car speakers — no buttons or shortcuts to press.
The startup sound plays from my phone speaker, not the car. Why?
The sound fired before the audio route switched to the car — this can happen on slower wireless connections. Increase the playback delay in CarTheme’s sound settings by 1–2 seconds.
Can I use my own sound file?
Yes. Import any MP3 or M4A file you own from the Files app. Keep it 3–8 seconds long for the best result.
What image formats can I use for widget backgrounds?
PNG (including transparent PNGs), JPG and HEIC all work. For transparent-background car cutouts, use a PNG — the app also includes an automatic background remover for car photos.
Do CarTheme widgets work on the iPhone home screen too?
Yes. Every widget you design works on the iPhone home screen and lock screen as well as CarPlay, so your phone and car can match.
Can I have different setups for different cars?
Yes — iOS stores CarPlay layouts per vehicle, so your daily driver and your weekend car can run completely different themes, widgets and sounds.
Does CarTheme drain my battery?
No. Widgets refresh on the system schedule and sounds are short clips triggered by the connection event — neither has a measurable battery impact.
Does CarTheme work while driving?
Yes. Widgets update live on the CarPlay screen. Setup and editing happen on your iPhone, which you should do while parked.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are managed by Apple: iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions → CarTheme → Cancel. You keep Premium access until the end of the paid period.
