How to Make a BMW Theme for CarPlay
Updated
You don’t need an actual BMW to get the Munich cockpit feel. With iOS 26 widgets and a few minutes in CarTheme, any CarPlay screen can channel that unmistakable iDrive atmosphere: deep blacks, ice-blue accents, and typography that means business.
What makes a dashboard feel “BMW”
Study a modern iDrive screen and a few design rules jump out:
- Near-black background — not gray, black. Maximum contrast, minimum glare.
- Ice-blue accent (#1EA0FF territory) used sparingly on live data.
- Wide, confident typography with generous spacing.
- Restraint — a few large elements, never a cluttered grid.
We’ll recreate each of these.
Step 1: Set the base
On your iPhone: Settings → General → CarPlay → your car → Wallpaper — choose the darkest wallpaper available. This is your black canvas.
Step 2: Build the widgets
In CarTheme, open the Themes tab and apply the Bavarian Cockpit preset — or build it manually in the editor:
- Create a clock widget: black background, white digits, ice-blue seconds accent.
- Create a battery/ETA widget: same palette, outlined icon style.
- Create a now playing widget: transparent background so the wallpaper shows through.
Keep it to three or four widgets. iDrive never crowds the screen.
Step 3: Add them to CarPlay
Settings → General → CarPlay → your car → Widgets → Add Widget — add your CarTheme widgets in the order you want them stacked. Full widget guide here.
Step 4: The sound
No BMW-style setup is complete silent. Pair the look with a sound from the BMW startup sounds collection — the Bavarian Welcome Chime for daily-driver dignity, or the M-Power Cold Start if your commute deserves drama. Setup takes one tap: startup sound guide.
Finishing touches
- Hide apps you never use so the icon grid stays tight (Customize in CarPlay settings).
- If your head unit runs bright, use CarTheme’s high-contrast variant to keep the blacks black.
- Running the same style on your phone? CarTheme widgets work on the iPhone home screen too — matching cockpit, pocket edition.
