The Best CarPlay Apps in 2026 — Full List by Category
CarPlay doesn’t run every iPhone app — Apple only allows categories that make sense (and are safe) while driving. Here’s the full picture: what works, the best picks in each category, and what will never show up on your dashboard.
Navigation
- Apple Maps — the default, and the only one with full iOS 26 integration (widgets, instrument-cluster maps in supported cars).
- Google Maps — best data on businesses and live traffic in many regions.
- Waze — unbeatable for police, hazard and speed-camera reports.
- Also solid: Sygic, TomTom GO, and offline-first apps for road-trippers.
Music & audio
- Apple Music and Spotify — both first-class on CarPlay.
- YouTube Music — yes, it has a real CarPlay app (audio only — more on video below).
- Amazon Music, Tidal, Deezer, SoundCloud — all supported.
- Radio: TuneIn, iHeart, Radio.com, plus most local broadcaster apps.
Podcasts & audiobooks
- Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Pocket Casts, Castro — all with full CarPlay interfaces.
- Audible and BookPlayer for audiobooks.
Messaging & calls
- Messages, WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack (calls) — these work by voice: Siri reads incoming messages aloud and you dictate replies. There’s deliberately no on-screen chat reading while driving.
EV charging, fuel & parking
- Tesla, ChargePoint, Electrify America — find and start charging sessions.
- Shell, ExxonMobil — pay for fuel from the screen.
- SpotHero, ParkWhiz — find and pay for parking.
Food & errands
Quick-order apps like Dunkin’, Chipotle and Panera let you trigger a saved order on the way — a category Apple added specifically for drive-through runs.
Customization
- CarTheme — widgets, themes and startup sounds for the iOS 26 dashboard. (That’s us.)
What’s NOT allowed on CarPlay — and why
Apple reviews every CarPlay app against strict driver-distraction rules, so these categories are blocked by policy:
- Video apps — no YouTube, Netflix or TikTok on the CarPlay screen (full explanation here).
- Social feeds — no Instagram, X or Facebook.
- Games — nothing interactive while driving; the closest you get is parked-fun widgets.
- Web browsers — no Safari or Chrome.
If an app isn’t in one of the approved categories (audio, navigation, communication, EV/fuel/parking, quick ordering, automaker apps), it can’t ship a CarPlay interface at all.
How to add apps to your CarPlay screen
Any compatible app you install on your iPhone appears on CarPlay automatically. To tidy the grid: Settings → General → CarPlay → your car → Customize — reorder with the drag handles, hide what you never use. Full walkthrough: customize your CarPlay dashboard.
