How to Disconnect or Turn Off CarPlay (Every Method)
Whether you want to stop CarPlay for a single trip or disable it permanently, here’s every way to do it — from the quickest to the most thorough.
Disconnect for this drive
- Wired: just unplug the cable. CarPlay ends immediately.
- On the car screen: open the CarPlay home screen, tap the car-maker’s icon (the button that returns you to the vehicle’s native system). CarPlay steps aside without disconnecting your phone.
- Wireless: turn off Bluetooth on your iPhone (Control Center), or start a Driving Focus exception — the session drops.
Stop this car from auto-connecting
If CarPlay launches every time you get in and you’d rather it didn’t:
- Settings → General → CarPlay on your iPhone.
- Select your car.
- Tap Forget This Car.
The car stays paired for phone calls and Bluetooth audio, but CarPlay won’t auto-start. Re-add it later from the same screen.
Turn CarPlay off completely
To disable CarPlay system-wide on the iPhone (it won’t work in any car until re-enabled):
- Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Turn on Content & Privacy Restrictions if it isn’t already.
- Tap Allowed Apps (or Allowed Apps & Features).
- Toggle CarPlay off.
This is the true “off switch.” It’s also the first thing to check if CarPlay mysteriously won’t start — someone may have toggled it here.
Stop wireless CarPlay specifically
Wireless CarPlay needs both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. To stop just the wireless behavior while keeping wired working: Settings → General → CarPlay → your car → toggle off “Connect Automatically,” or forget the car as above.
